A Valentine’s Day Paint and Sip We’ll Never Forget
Back in 2021, during our very first Valentine’s Day paint and sip weekend as the new owners of Cheers N Paint in Cary, NC, we had no idea just how magical that weekend would become.
It all started with a phone call. On the other end of the line was a very eager customer asking how our paint and sip classes worked.
I happily explained, “During this special Valentine’s class, we’ll be offering a champagne toast with chocolates. You’ll sit next to your partner, line up your canvases, and paint together.”
There was a pause.
Then I heard a long sigh followed by, “Ooo.. okay.”
I froze, definitely not the response I was expecting! Sensing something more, I gently asked,
“Is there something else I can help with?”
That’s when I felt it, even through the phone, a huge smile and pure excitement. He said, “Yes. I want to propose to my girlfriend during your class.”
My heart instantly melted.
He explained that he wanted to write his proposal on the canvas and reveal it to her near the end of the class. Immediately, my wheels started turning. How could we make this moment perfect and still a surprise?
A Paint and Sip Valentine’s Day Surprise Proposal
After some creative brainstorming, I decided to reimagine the entire studio layout just for them.
Instead of couples sitting side-by-side, I arranged the room so partners sat across from one another. Each person painted their own canvas, but toward the end of the class, they would turn their canvases around, allowing the tree branches from each painting to line up and create one cohesive image.
The day was finally here, and all our planning was in place.
Before guests arrived, I had each couple’s table carefully marked as “reserved,” making sure our special couple was seated exactly where they needed to be. Everything had to be just right.
We began the class like any other, welcoming everyone, wishing them a Happy Valentine’s Day, pouring champagne, and starting with the background of the painting. Laughter filled the room as couples painted, sipped, and enjoyed the evening together.
About an hour into the class, we approached the moment we had all been quietly building toward… the canvas turn.
The customer had shared with me that he planned to write “Will you marry me?” on his canvas. Now, most people think writing with a paintbrush is easy, but truthfully, it’s one of the hardest things for beginner painters to do. Knowing this, I had prepared just in case and ordered a paint marker ahead of time.
Thank goodness I did. I could see him struggling, carefully trying to form each letter. As I walked by, I subtly slipped him the marker, and the relief on his face said it all. Crisis averted.
Now, it was their moment.
I quietly pulled out my phone, ready to capture everything. With my heart pounding just as much as his, I asked the class to turn their canvases. It felt like time stood still. The second she saw the words, he got down on one knee and proposed. She smiled and said “FINALLY – YES!!”
Cheers erupted. Tears flowed. The entire room exploded with love, applause, and celebration.
