Our family started offering summer art camp at Cheers N Paint in 2021.
After only a few weeks, we noticed that cell phones and other handheld devices were interrupting the creative process. They were also limiting opportunities for campers to interact with one another.
Then came a moment we will never forget.
One of our campers spotted a praying mantis on the sidewalk outside our studio. She took a picture of it and called the other campers over to look at the image on her phone.
One of our counselors realized what was happening and invited everyone to walk to the front door to see the real praying mantis instead.
The children had an opportunity to observe something interesting in nature, but their first instinct had been to experience it through a screen.
That was the moment we decided to make studio time device-free.
What Happened When We Put the Phones Away
The feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive.
They appreciated that camp gave their children a structured break from screen time. Campers can still keep a phone tucked safely in their backpacks, and our counselors carry phones so parents can reach the studio when needed.
Once devices were removed from everyday camp activities, we noticed a meaningful change.
Campers began sharing more ideas as they painted and crafted. They talked to one another while working on projects, participated in games, and formed new friendships.
They were not simply completing art projects. They were imagining, experimenting, problem-solving, and learning from one another.
Those are exactly the experiences we want to encourage at our Cary art studio.
Screen-Free Does Not Have to Mean Technology-Free
We still use technology thoughtfully at Cheers N Paint.
Our in-studio TV may be used during lunch or breaks for a movie or an interactive group game. However, blocks, dinosaurs, board games, and imaginative play are often just as popular.
The goal is not to suggest that all technology is bad. It is to help children discover that entertainment does not always have to come from a screen.
Sometimes a blank canvas, a box of craft supplies, or a new group of friends is all they need.
